Question

#13
Subject: Safety of metals in contact with the liquid food product inside the package.

In one of our projects we need to have an electrical contact in a small point between the external and internal part of the package, so inside it, we'll have a contact between the product and the metal we want to use. I'd like to know if there are some restrictions from safety and health care point of view coming from FDA or something like that concerning the sort of metals they can be in contact with the liquid food product inside the package.

Subject: Aluminium is "generally recognized as safe".

As far as I know, the FDA does not list e.g aluminium foil as the most commonly used metal in packaging. So there is no statement about direct food contact of aluminium. As far as I am informed, aluminium is "generally recognized as safe" without being specially tested or mentioned. However, I would be very careful with liquids. If you think about e.g. orange juice - I would not like to have a direct contact with alumiunium! I would suggest to run internal trials about the interaction between the liquid and the metal to avoid problems.
