Question

#1763
Subject: In packaging applications what thickness of aluminium coating is applied to PET film to impart good water barrier properties (e.g. WVTR < 1g/m2/day)?

Answers (links jump to full text of answer below)

#1764

Typically metallised PET with an aluminium thickness of >12nm giving an optical density of around 2.0 will give the level of barrier that you are after.

Typically metallised PET with an aluminium thickness of >12nm giving an optical density of around 2.0 will give the level of barrier that you are after. Obviously thicker aluminium will further improve the barrier performance.

If you want details of how the oxygen & moisture barrier performance changes with coating thickness & how the thickness relates to optical density AIMCAL publish a 'Metallizing Technical Reference' 3rd Edn. which is available to members for sale on the AIMCAL website. You may find this useful.
