If the lines you are getting are very uniform and in the machine direction, they are called ribbing

If the lines you are getting are very uniform and in the machine direction, they are called ribbing and are most likely caused by the diverging angle as the wet coating leaves the smoothing rod. There are several possible solutions:

1. Can you remove the rod and still get a satisfactory coating?

2. Rotate the rod in the reverse direction. The best speed of rotation would would have to be determined by trial.

3. Replace the rod with a knife that does not have this diverging flow on the exit, such as a tapered knife with the taper facing the kiss coater, a rounded knife with the rounded side facing the kiss coater, or a bull nose knife (a rod with the exit quadrent removed).
