Subject: The customer is complaining about fast deterioration of the surface energy.

We are metallizing a 20 micron with 0.05 microns of 99.8% pure aluminum wire. The customer is complaining about fast deterioration of the surface energy (dynes) on the metallized surface. The deterioration is from 44 dynes to less than 38 dynes within 1 month.

Most likely, your dyne level is dropping due slip agents migrating to the surface of the BOPP and then transferring by direct contact within the wound roll to the metallized surface.

If this is the case, the BOPP must be replaced with a better quality material which uses non-migratory slip agents or a film specifically intended for metallization. It's possible to use a heavy solvent based ink to cut through the surface contamination but it's a fix to use bad film, not a proper solution.

Subject: I would like to mention the need for an inline corona-treatment.

In addition to answer #1, I would like to mention the need for an inline corona-treatment of the metallized side of BOPP, when printing or laminating. In my opinion, it is absolutely necessary to use an inline treatment for printing, coating or laminating a metallized BOPP film.

For the suitable equipment, please contact the suppliers of corona stations (not every corona station is suitable for metallized films!)
