Question

Subject: We have a problem with tarnish on paper metallizing.

We are developing metallized paper for beer labels and have a problem with tarnish on paper metallizing despite a nice and shiny base coat. What is the base coat function and what type of composition? Will moisture cause tarnish? Is it necessary to apply top coat to get ink retention in soda bath for returnable beer labels?

If the moisture content is too high in the paper, it will turn brown as soon as it is metallized.

If the moisture content is too high in the paper, it will turn brown as soon as it is metallized.

As far as top coating goes, it must be top coated to ensure that the metal is not rubbed off, also to ensure that there is enough moisture put back into the paper so it doesn't curl up. Some metallizers will not run a high moisture content, sometimes the moisture will be trapped in the coating and will not release until it passes over the metallizing section of the machine. Sometimes you might even get a high vacuum rise at this time. I have noticed that there are times the vacuum will not rise at all, but will still cause the metal to turn brown. Also the wrong wire alloy will also cause the paper to turn brown. Try checking the moisture content in the paper first. If you have a bell jar where you can test a small section of paper it might help a lot. We run about 2.5 moisture in our paper, our sister plant can run at 4.0.
