Question

#51
Subject: Running Laminated Foil boards and Metallized Polyester.

We are in the developmental stages of running Laminated Foil boards and Metallized Polyester. We are inexperienced, and would like some help with regards as to what type(s) of ink(s) work best, (4-6 colour work), whether we should run white down first or simply run the inks without a base coat, etc.

First for the foil it is advisable to treat the surface to remove any traces of processing oils and recover the native aluminum surface.

For films it is advisable to prime the surface prior to printing to insure uniform results. While it is possible to print with out a primer the results obtained are not uniform. Film type will have some impact on what primer is best and it may be advisable to treat in line to insure a native printing surface. This is especially true with OPP and would need conformation with your PET film.

As to use of white base coat it would still in my mind need a primer to insure uniform product quality and unless there is 100% ink coverage with your other colors it may be necessary to insure coverage of the primer to prevent blocking.

As to inks to use recommendations from your current ink or film suppliers should be available. Or it should be possible to find ink suppliers specializing in inks for surface printing metallized films. It has been my experience that they hesitate to give firm recommendations and may want to test your film prior to giving a recommendation. Your film supplier should be able to tell you how to convert the film. If not you will have to develop the recommendations your self or in conjunction with a consultant.
