The basic technique for non-contact measurement of web temperatures is Infrared thermometers. A wide variety of these are available and some have outputs that can be fed into controllers or recorded by computer. In theory these could be used to control process. They are usually not because the signal may not be stable. They could be used for gross control.

Thermistors mounted close to web can also give temperature measurements but they are not as sensitive as infrared.

Another method to measure web temperature is to insert thermocouple in a roll that contacts web. At equilibrium the temperature measured will be that of web.
